Close call and January review

The official month end is tonite at 9 pm so I figure I will blog before I get started for the evening.

Before I do the review I have to write about a really close call I had this morning on my way home from work. Before I had left my relief had warned me that the side roads in town were very icy. But by the time I had gotten to my turnoff south of town I was in my own little world. Ironically, I was recounting some of the timeline of events in my life over the past 20 years or so from my early 20's on and thinking about how I had gotten to where I was today. I was in a good mood just kinda zoning out thinking about this stuff and in autopilot driving along when i came to my exit. As I was making what is usually a pretty standard merge onto the side road from the highway at about 35-40mph I hit a major ice patch and lost complete control of the truck. It's amazing how fast the adreniline kicks in because I was instantly aware of the total lack of control I had as I slid across into the oncoming lanes. I was also instantly aware that by the grace of God there was not any traffic coming my way even at this early part of rush hour. I fishtailed a couple wags going in the wrong direction but was able to regain control, basically by letting go of everything and letting the truck find itself. That is pretty much the only way on ice. Feet and hands off everything for a second and then hopefully straight. At least I think thats how I managed. Instincts take over there and thankfully I have quite a bit of experience in the snow and ice. But in that truck it is definately scary. Once I regained control I realized how fortunate I had been. At that speed a head-on collision is extremely serious if not deadly. I am very lucky!! I had been thinking about alot of things in the past last night including the possibility of our ancestors watching us as we live our lives. I wonder what they thought there or if they had any hand in the outcome? A message perhaps? I try to keep the metaphysical musings to a minimum as I live my life but sometimes I cannot help but wonder...

Pokerwise, January was a watershed month for me. If what has happened since the 2nd of January when I lost $600 continues then I will have truly taken that next step forward. Since the 2nd including the value of fpps and cash won directly I was up over $3000. January was far and away my most successful month ever on many levels. Taking just cash won on the month as a whole including the 2nd I was still up over $1700. Going forward I am looking to have another strong month in February and a consolidation of my progress as I continue to tinker with my game. I continue to open up my preflop play and it is my hope that this will lead to further gains going forward. As I have studied some of the data collected on Pokertracker, I have come to realize that to become a bigger winner I need to utilize my very aggressive postflop play by mixing up my preflop play more. I have been among the most tight and passive preflop regulars on Stars 100nl. I will be continuing to work on that in the future.

Earlier in the month I had finally made my Dec first cashout 40 days late. I had stated that I had a shot at making my Feb 1st deadline ontime if I continued to run well. As of tonite I am just short of making it with a br of about $2370. Because I am late anyway I plan on waiting now to cashout until probably at least $2600. Which still leaves me a bit short. We shall see. Last time I got close I hit a bit of a mental wall near the cashout amount before blowing thru it during this January runup.

Freeroll Cash and a big Woops!

The other post marked for the 26th is actually from the wee morning hours of the 25th, so this is the Saturday post.

We had expected some snow today but only some light flurries showed up. That is actually a good thing as I think I'm about done with snow this year! We had at least some snow on the ground for 2 months straight from Mid November to Mid January. I had never seen that before around here but then again when we moved up to the lake it elevated us a few hundred feet up in behind Malahat Mountain. Definately a different climate around this area then down in Victoria.

I did end up playing quite a lot this afternoon. I busted early in the 20k and made a mistake in the 50k when I really had a good chance to cash. But if it had gone my way, again it would have put me right up with the chip leaders at the time. The 100k freeroll went quite well for the most part. I went fairly deep and cashed for $100 finishing 163rd out of 5292 starters. I'm happy with that but I don't like the way I finally busted. I basically went card dead for a long time and never got my chips in until quite late. There was not a whole lot I could do but I might have tried to steal from late position a couple times when I had a chance. It was tough though as there were some very aggressive big stacks at my table throwing their weight around. I just had terrible cards and could not take advantage of them finally getting it in with only 3-4 bb's with K5s called by 88 who ended up catching 2 more 8's for quads just to rub it in!!

On the cash tables I was playing really well today. I've noted that my preflop raise % climbed quite a bit today and I am really hoping to push it up over 5% in the next little while. I was also really trying to raise my V$IP (volutary put $ in pot) % as well by calling preflop with position more often.

As I said I was doing well up 2.5 buyins when I played a hand that I just totally misread getting it in when my QQ hit a set on the turn. A guy who had been playing quite loose checked into me on the flop and turn but repopped me and went all the way when that Q hit his straight. Check out the line here and you can see why I had no idea what he had and that he had hit. There is really nothing I can do here. He raised me preflop flop to $4 from the cutoff and I merely call in the bb. My first mistake I suppose. 1086 flop w/ 2 hearts and I check and he checks for the free card. Wow, I am really passive here arn't I! When the Q hits me on the turn I figure I am good. No way I'm thinking J9 here or 79. With 2 hearts on the board I am thinking lower set for him trying to take away a flush draw. He really delays his raise too which really set the hook into me. I was like sweet I got ya sucker.....WOOPS!

I dunno. Very tough to make the right read there but then again I was so passive preflop and on the flop that I gave him every opportunity to make a hand there. I was trying to set a trap for him here and it just totally backfired. Unfortunately, his hand was very well disguised both by his preflop raise from the cutoff and by his check behind on the flop. I almost always try to take a pot down with a draw by betting it. Especially when I have raised preflop. I will almost always continuation bet there. He decided to take a look and in this instance it paid off for him.....so while I disagree with his line in this hand it ended up making me look foolish and my br lighter by about $99!

Holy Coolers and some general analysis

Well if I hadn't thought my hot streak was over I do now. I ran into some terrible coolers tonite. 99 with 9AA flop. Guy had limped with AK from early position and I had no idea he had that as we had both limped. It really did not matter in the end as I was destined to get stacked when he rivered his K. The worst one was when buddy slow plays AA from early position and I limp on the button with 1010. Flop comes A105 rainbow. I'm thinking, great how do I get him allin! He check calls a small flop bet from me and we are headsup. 4 on the turn and again he checks into me! I bet $6 he min cr and I come over him for $25. Of course he pushes and I'm thinking I'm good of course!! Fuck no!! Another hand saw me flop top two and the villian flops a straight in the blind. Frankly, considering the number of coolers and the lack of big hands coming my way I am ok with a loss of a buyin and a half.

Long term I am probably less bullish than I have been. Losing does that but so has some analysis of my game using PokerTracker. I have always known I was a nitty player with very rockish tendancies. However I never realized just how ingrained this style has become. I actually have quite unusual stats and I am now know how some regulars are able to exploit my weak preflop play. I have very low V$IP (volutarily Put $ In Pot) % and very low PFR (preflop raise) %. Combined with a very strong postflop aggresion factor this allows regulars to only play premium hands against me. It means I have some more adjustments to make as I start to open up my game. I need to raise more preflop and find ways to play more pots in general. In other words I need to call raises far more loosely preflop and raise more preflop. I like my postflop play generally. I am already among the most aggressive players postflop. If I can get my preflop game in order I would think that AF (aggression factor) will fall somewhat as I will not always be taking such premium hands postflop....

If I can make these adjustments successfully I might be able to make more strides in the future. Its a process as I break my game down and rebuild it up. The hard part will be doing this while playing .50/1 where so many of my regular opponents have such detailed reads on me at their disposal.

I am also going to add PAH (poker ace Hud) software to my arsenal soon as a companion to PT (Pokertracker) software, it overlays my opponents PT stats on the tables. Hopefully this will help me make better decisions as in who to raise and who to call down in tough choice situations.

Tomorrow I will be playing freerolls in the afternoon and multitabling some cash tables.

Life

Not much has happened on the poker front since my last post. I have played just three non-descript medium length sessions and am slightly down.

Personally, not much has happened either. I am feeling a touch of melancholy I suppose and this is more of a diary post to get it out of me I think. I am not one to suffer much in the way of dramatic downs. At least not in a long time. However, I do sometimes wish I were more able to maintain a feeling of confidence, and belief. I mean that in a really personal way. I have swings like anybody else, and right now I am in a negative swing mentally. It is not a huge negative, don't get me wrong, but I have a feeling of tired about me that I find annoying and difficult to shake. It affects me at an attitudinal level. As in, right now I have a bad attitude about things. Easily irritated, annoyed etc..I want to just push through it, even though I know that rest is probably the better course. A vacation would be nice! That might be part of the problem though, as I know that will not happen on any level for a few months. There will be no time off work for me straight thru until June with the exception of maybe a couple extra days off around Easter when I will not get scheduled. I have worked night shifts for many years now and in my current job for five years. The shift aspect of the work has its benefits but the irregular hours does play havoc with the body and mind. There are times when I wish I could leave this job behind. There are other ways to make money in this world but for now I am destined to work for this company, in this capacity. Perhaps, one day, I will find a better way to make a living. I'm not saying I have a terrible job. It is not. It just is not something that is gratifying. As I approach 40, I wonder if I will ever be in a position to live and work in a more gratifying position.

Hmm, well, thanks for letting me get some of that off my chest. I know there is a lot of things going right in my life. I also know I need to refocus on that and continue to look for ways to enhance our experience. Life is quite a balancing act isn't it!! Don.

This hand was a real rarity in that 4 of us got allin and we all either had a draw to win outright or in my case was already there.
4 of us had limped in when the bb raised to $6 with KK. Once the two limpers in front of me called I decided I had a good chance at a big pot if I hit my 10 so I called down as well. One of the limpers behind me called and the sb folded. 4 of us saw the flop and what a flop!

4c 10s 7s

The big blind of course had the big overpair. The first caller had called with A6s so now had the nut flush draw. Oh but wait the second caller had 8s9s for the straight flush draw!! But I was sitting there with top set! This is a hand destined for fireworks! The bb tries to defend overpair by leading out for $15 into the $18.50 pot. This backfires as he is first called by the A high flush draw and pushed into by the straight flush draw. I am hoping I hold up as I push allin for my whole stack. Calls all around and as the 3h and 8d falls harmlessly I am able to scoop up and run! Very nice!

Preflop I had been only 16% to win this hand. After the flop I had become a big favorite slightly better than even money so I was now getting terrific pot odds. The straight flush was slightly better than the A high at about 3.8-1 and 4-1. The guy who started it all with KK was a 25-1 shot.

Anyway except for the blip on the 16th, the week is going pretty well. I have been very tired though and have not played a ton but still up over 4 buyins since Monday.

2008 Poker Goals

1.Earn over 200000 vpps.
This is very doable. If I make it, there is a bonus from Stars worth about $1200 . This will also give me about 700000 fpps which is worth in excess of $11000.

2.Win a seat to a major tournament.
It will be interesting to see if I end up playing many satellites. This year is more about building my bankroll via the cash tables. At the least I hope to play some bigger tourneys online including the WCOOP in September.

3.Move up to 1/2NLH on a permanent basis
I would be very surprised if I end the year still playing .50/1 and I would also be surprised if I have already moved thru 1/2 by the end of the year. I will have a much better idea of where I am in a couple of months as I work thru the growing pains of the changes in my game.

4.Earn over $10000 at the cash tables this year.
I am hoping that I am being conservative with this number.

5.Build my bankroll to over $8ooo.
Anything over that I plan to withdraw at this point. I have plenty of backup in the form of fpps already. If I move past 2/4 then of course this is going to change. That however is extremely unlikely.

6.Move my career earnings over $40000
Doing the math I think this is more than doable. Currently my earnings are just under 16k. Given my fpp earnings of $11000 + $1200 bonus + at least $1500 in freeroll equity I would need to earn approximately another $10000 at the cash tables. I have to believe that is a possibility. But really, that is far from a given at this point.

7.Move from 9 tables to at least 12
This will require a different monitor setup, so at some point I will have to make some changes in this regard. 12 tabling should be very similar to 9 tabling at this point except of course I will have the opportunity to either generate more fpps or compact my play into less time.

Well, that's that. I don't believe any of those goals are particularly outlandish. In fact, other than the cash table estimate which is very up in the air all of these estimates are somewhat conservative.

Tonight I played a few thousand hands and was down just over $300 very quickly. I overplayed a couple of KK and QQ hands pre and post flop against the wrong opponents which is definately a danger at times when my mind is not focused properly. After a break, I settled in and eventually was only down about $20 after a short while. I was playing much better now. Unfortunately the cards did not continue for me and I really could do not much and I dwindled down and could not catch. Tired I stopped playing down about $200 tonight. This was my first significant loss since the 10th when I was down $169. I plan to play quite a bit tomorrow as well as maybe watching a couple videos and the Canuck game. Not likely to make There Will be Blood this week but good chance of catching an Imax on Friday. We have a yearly pass for that.

Still Smokin Hot

I have been going over my estimates for what I should expect in 2008 but because of the way I have been playing lately I am going to delay my goals for a few more days. Frankly, most of my estimates have not included the fact that I would be beating the 100nl by as much as I have been in the past two weeks since my shift in gameplay strategy. I am up over $1750 since the 2nd and my play continues to be dominating. It is really hard to tell if I am just running very hot or if I really have taken that next step. To be honest, I believe it has a lot more to do with my new style. I can see where my opponents are so much better and I am getting great value for my hands as I continue to get called down even though I am betting so much stronger. It is not like I had an image of someone you should be calling down light to begin with either. I have one of the tightest images on the level. So, I am really pinching myself and hoping this isn't a dream.
Tonight I was up another $275 and considering I was stacked twice for huge pots it could have been much more. Both these pots were ones that I would have played before very similarly in the past so I am not blaming my system for those mistakes.

Anyway, I have a few days off here and I plan on playing quite a lot this week. I am slightly behind in my goal of getting 16666vpps in January. Hopefully I can get back on track this week. I might try to get to see 'There Will Be Blood' with Lisa. Other than that puttering around the yard I think. It is still quite a mess but it might have to wait because there is a thin layer of snow on it.

A Shift in Strategy

It has been quite a week. The day after I played live last week I played a session on Stars that could have big implications for the way I play going into the future. It started out well but I quickly got behind a couple of buy-ins. From there I played way over aggressively. I won some big pots but ended up donking a few more buy-ins off. I was on tilt in a way, but at the same time something started to click for me. One of my biggest leaks has been my passive play when I know I am ahead or have a very good hand. I often underplay hands instead of being very aggressive with them, especially on the flop and turn. Fundamentally, I have not changed my style a great deal in terms of starting hands or how I play them preflop except I am slighty more aggressive the more limpers there are in the hand. This is doing two things. Raising out players and isolating, and more importantly increasing the pot size post flop. That is something I have been negligent on in the past. It allows a larger post flop bet from me if the cards fall correctly. It gives me more options in bet sizing thru all the streets. It can make an opposing player feel more committed to the hand and more likely to call me down light or conversely bail out without trying to come over top of me. If they do come over the top, it makes it much more likely they are holding a big hand than in the past when I might have been acting too weak with a good but not great hand. I know for a fact I have been bluffed off a ton of pots in the past year. This will hopefully not continue to the extent that it had.

The results this week since that point have been nothing short of terrific. I have been winning at a rate that I have not won at since moving up to the 100nl tables. Whether that continues or not time will tell. I have definately run hot this week, and most of my hands have held up. I was able to finally make a withdrawal that is 41 days late but had looked to be much later. My next cashout is due on the 1st of February. That gives me 20 days; so I have a shot at making that deadline and getting back on track.

One other move I have made that should have a positive impact on my game is the recent purchase of pokertracker software. I have meant to get this for about two years. So, really it is about time! This software will allow me to better track not only my results but my opponents as well. The theory is that will allow me to make better decisions against common opponents.

So, all in all, I have been able to really focus on making improvements to my game and so far the impact has been positive. I hope that continues. Again, no 2008 goals as yet, but hopefully by the next post.

New Year's at the casino

Just a quick note. No goals yet, but will be forthcoming, along with some current strategies on achieving said goals.

I did play a few orbits of 1/2 NLH at the casino today. Lisa and I just went in to look around and dump $10 in the slots and found they had spread some electronic NLH tables. NO dealer or chips but sort of a live/online hybrid. Fast pace for a casino game. Pretty tough to get many tells as no one is fumbling chips. And not much talking. But, still it was an interesting experience for me since I have never played poker in a live setting with complete strangers. It is odd how big a disconnect there is in online poker. To actually see your opponents is a huge advantage. Almost instantly I was able to place these guys into categories and to a large extent from what I saw my instincts were holding true. I was only able to play a few orbits but it was super interesting. It had been a long time since my heart got pumping from playing poker and the fact we were using a foreign interface did not help. But I think I did alright. I almost had a small stack allin fairly quickly when he was calling down my KK but I was fumbling around so much that I think I gave off a bit more strength than I meant too and he got away with the remainder of his stack. The one thing that kind of surprised me but actually did correspond with what I had heard was how soft the live game is supposedly. I think there may have been one or two decent players at the table. At least, players who might give me trouble in the long run. The guy to my immediate left seemed to have a decent idea of what he was doing and in the time I was there he ran very hot as well. He got a couple of wild players allin and had a set of JJ's the first time and top two pair flush draw the second time vs a guy with top pair top kicker. Two things though led me to believe he was actually not very experienced. First he didn't know what the auto-muck button did and secondly he actually thought about folding his A8s double paired flush draw on the turn when the guy to his left put him allin. I woulda been insta calling here because that guy had just sat down and looked ready to blow some money. The way he bet out was reckless like he was gambling on decent but beaten hand. Other than that there were a couple of loose fishies. One guy won a three way preflop allin pot with Q9o for crying out loud. After he had sucked out trips he was like, thats the best hand Ive had all day! Huh?? That is like a fucking awful starting hand you donk!! LOL. Anyway, one kid looked scared to be there and I think was there with his buddy who looked coked out and was gambling it up. He was actually playing with chips in his hand which was funny because we were not using chips.... The other guys included a couple of asian guys who were complete rocks. The tightest guy at the table showed his KK when he got no action with it. He was like throwing his hands up like awww damn. There was some eye-rolling there as he wasn't playing nothing. But who knows I only played a couple dozen hands at most. The funniest character was the classic wannabe kid (no not me!) in a leather jacket and FullTilt Poker hat and shirt. Acting all tough and looking nervous and buys in for only $60. Yeah, good luck mate. Anyway it was short but like I say it was a good experience.

New Year's Eve 2007 Year end report

Well, first off, Happy New Year! Welcome to the 2007 year end review...

I started off the year with 6 goals. During my half year report on July 1st I pretty much summed up how those goals were going. Not much has changed except that I am now posting much more on blogger in the past month or so.

At the beginning of the year.....

I was a Platinum VIP on Stars. BR just over $3k. Up about 10k+ in my poker career. Playing .50/1NLH 4-6 multitabling.

Those goals were
1. Continue to build BR without withdrawing from it to over $15K in 2007.
This did not happen. I withdrew over 5000K in 2007. My bankroll is less than it was at the beginning of the year and I have plans to continue to withdraw from my bankroll on a bi-monthly basis.

2.As my BR builds to move up, 2007 goal is to be at least playing 2/4NLH(need about 12-15k ) and possibly as high as 5/10NLH(need 30k)
Clearly this did not happen and will most likely not happen in 2008, although you never know.

3.Platinum vip on stars every month and Supernova by September
Supernova was accomplished but about 40 days late. I went Supernova in October and was platinum all but one month leading up to that.

4.Win seat to 2007 WSOP
Yeah, uhh no. My efforts were muted as I put most of my energy into pursuing Supernova status. Likely, 2008 will find me in a similar situation...

5.Update my blog with greater regularity. At least once a week.
Well, at first this wasn't happening, but in December I post nearly every second day. Hopefully this continues and the content will increase as well...

6.Start using PokerTracker for crying out loud!
I have no idea why I have been so poor at using every tool at my disposal that will help me improve my game. This needs to change.

So, what did go well in 2007 and what do I have to build on. Well, first off I was able to move up to playing 9 tables simultaneously and when and if I ever upgrade to a higher resolution monitor I feel I will have no problem playing 12 or more. That is important as I earn fpps. Also I had my best earnings year ever. If I include the value of fpps earned in 2007 with actual bankroll cash, my earnings this year were in the 7.5k range. This was somewhat short of my hopes but actually in line with what was expected. My "career" earnings including fpps and tourney cash is now over 16K. I am hoping that takes a big leap forward in 2008 and will follow up on that in my next post which will include my poker goals for 2008.

Happy New Year everyone.
